BIS Certification is provided in India by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body has been successfully promoting and nurturing standards movement within the country since 1947. BIS came into existence on 1987 through an Act of Parliament. BIS is involved in various activities like standards formulation, certification of products, hallmarking, testing and calibration scheme and more.

BIS provides third party certification with respect to the quality of the product. BIS in this regard gives licence to manufacturers of various products which manufactures the product as per Indian Standard specifications.

All the products are classified into two categories:

Products under Compulsory Certification:

There are 211 products which are mandated to obtain BIS certification before manufacture, store or sell by Ministry’s Quality Control Order. Without BIS Certification, these products cannot be manufactured or sold.

Apart from the above 211, all the other products are under voluntary scheme, where the certification should be obtained to establish good position in the market with quality products.
